Skyscapes
Like Vincent van Gogh before me, I experience the world through the extraordinary lens of synesthesia. Where van Gogh's 'Starry Night' revealed the churning energies of the cosmos through his distinctive swirling brushwork, my Skyscapes emerge from a similar ability to perceive the multi-sensory symphony of the heavens.
However, while van Gogh's work erupted in passionate impasto, I choose to capture these energetic frequencies through the measured patience of Old Masters glazing techniques.
This methodical approach creates a distinct conversation with van Gogh's legacy. Where his synesthesia manifested in bold, immediate expressions, my interpretation of these same celestial energies unfolds gradually through transparent layers of color and light. Each glaze acts as a filter, capturing different frequencies of the sky's living energy - from the deep pulses of approaching storms to the delicate whispers of sunlight piercing cloud formations.
Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that 'the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.' Similarly, I find that synesthesia reveals the hidden chromatic music in every atmospheric state - not just in dramatic moments, but in the subtle shifts of ordinary skies. Yet where van Gogh's genius emerged through psychological turmoil, my work seeks to channel these sensory convergences into contemplative spaces that invite peaceful reflection.
In the century-plus since van Gogh's time, science has begun to understand what artists like him intuited - that space itself carries energy, that the air around us pulses with invisible forces. My work bridges this gap between artistic sensitivity and scientific understanding, using traditional techniques to express contemporary awareness of our dynamic, energy-filled universe."
Standridge Skyscapes capture those fleeting moments when heaven and earth converge in symphonies of light and shadow. Using time-honored glazing techniques of the old masters, each piece reveals the ever-changing drama above us - from turbulent storm clouds to serene dawn light. These works transform corporate spaces and private collections into windows to the infinite, inviting viewers to pause and experience the sublime power of the sky.
